A can with water was placed above the rifle and another one was hung by a rope and attached to the trigger. A small hole was then made in the first can, allowing water to drip into the second can over time. Once the can filled enough, its weight would set off the trigger, firing the rifle hours after the evacuation. This tricked the enemy into thinking the trench was still full of soldiers, allowing them to escape safely.
